Strat 3

Assignment 1

The article "Machen proposes 30 percent tuition hike" is about the tuition hike that Machen proposed as a solution to state budget cuts.

The article is superficial and only touches on the facts of his proposal. By asking a few more questions, the journalist can delve deeper into the meaning of tuition hikes. Below are a few questions that might lead to interesting angles of the story.

Steps to Better Enterprise Ideas

1. Make a list.
How many other schools have increased tuition to deal with the bad economy?
Have these schools been successful?
How would Bright Futures respond to this change? Would it still cover the same amount it does now?

2. Think about change.
What kind of response would this have from the incoming students?
Is there a possibility that less people would attend college?

3. Think about the unusual.
Why would it increase by 30 percent?
How did Machen choose that number?
What would this money be used for?

4. Think about the next steps.
When would the new policy be implemented?
Which parties have to approve it?

5.  Ask how.
How will the policy be implemented?
What are the steps needed?
Will it happen gradually?
What changes does this require of the current operating system?
